Animals can be divided into those that are primarily active at night and others that are mainly active during the day. Humans, by contrast, work eight hours a day at their jobs and then sleep four hours.

This division of time is an important part of what makes humans different from animals. While this distinction isn’t always made in animal studies, it’s a critical difference for how scientists view life.

Humans have a fixed number of days between their birth and death, which gives them scope over their actions. An animal will spend its whole life chasing food or fleeing predators with little chance to explore or play.

By dividing time into periods of sleep and awake, people divide energy levels too. People have a peak level of activity, called melatonin — a hormone that helps regulate sleep—for about six hours after waking up.

After that, blood sugar drops and physical fatigue sets in. There’s another drop-off around midday when stress hormones go back up. Blood pressure also rises more sharply during stressful times.

Between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., we’re physically exhausted and experiencing low levels of serotonin, a chemical in our bodies that produces feelings of happiness and relaxation. That’s why we feel relaxed and sleepy at night.

They eat lots of corn

Pigs are very good at two things; eating food that we put in their mouth and producing more pigs.

Pigs are almost completely fed by feeding they get from farmers, so the cost of pork is related mostly to how much money you pay for feed (which is why soybean costs slightly more), transportation, and market price changes.

Because it takes a lot of work to make beef, chickens are usually cheaper than cows. Chickens only have to be kept egg-laying hens, while cows need to be fattened up and prepared for meat production.

Beef is less expensive mainly because we spend a lot of time and energy getting people interested in what we eat. Red meats are not typically thought of as being healthy, which reduces the demand and hence the value of red meats. Fish is also relatively cheap since we can pull it out of the water. Also, while you may think that meat is meat, and shouldn’t cost much, this simply isn’t true. Fresh pork has more marbling, or extra oil inside the muscle, which gives it a richer taste and color than fresh beef.

Pork is also cheaper than beef for another reason — they feed pigs so many things besides grass! Pigs are fed corn, mixed into their slops, and eventually eaten by people in the form of tacos and dishes at dinner time. Since they consume billions of dollars worth of food each year, pigs are quite profitable for farmers.

Not only do they get to eat unlimited amounts of free swine food, but those who raise them find them easy to keep healthy and clean, making pig-feeding a lucrative business.

They lay eggs

Female pigs will collect litter in a special place they have created, called their nest. From there, they’ll search for a safe place to give birth to and nurse their babies. Once the births happen, the mothers won’t participate much in raising the kids

Pigs are communal animals, which means that if you provide adequate space (such as a large barn), they will all live together. Pigs can be quite social, especially when bred appropriately.

This is where those gestation crates come into play. Crates are small cages that limit a pig’s movements while she is pregnant or nursing. By limiting how she moves, her body language changes, making it more difficult to bond with her baby.

Given enough time and effort, this reduction in movement isn’t as significant since the mother-child relationship remains strong. But behaviorally, it’s still very meaningful. The crate life causes stress levels within the animal to rise, eating away at her health over time.

Also, during the winter months, male pigs will sleep in the farrowing room after the females have left. This is because the males need lower temperatures than the female pigs do to keep themselves warm. Due to the cold weather, the males will stay in these rooms by themselves until spring comes around again.

They don’t require many resources to produce

One of the biggest reasons why pork is cheaper than beef is that it requires less land per unit quantity. About five times as much farmland is required to grow a cow compared to an animal like 1/2 pig.

Also, pigs are more expensive if you take into account the food needed to feed them and the labor involved in taking care of them. A pound of hamburger for example, consists of 5 ounces of meat (which contains around 15 grams of fat), 4900 calories, and costs about $6.29.

By comparison, it cost about $3.89 to raise one hog last year. Clearly, raising animals for food is not very efficient. Animals have all sorts of needs that add up to substantial expenses.

To illustrate how much money can be saved by cutting out some of these expenditures, let’s say we wanted to save every penny possible. We’d need to limit ourselves to only what we could afford or to live without for awhile.

There’s also heredity factors contributing to the low resource usage of pigs. When humans develop agriculture, we did not originally have animals in mind as farm tenants, but that was over thousands of years.

Our own physiology adapted to having dogs and cats walking around eating whatever scraps were left. Our bodies have already withstood the stresses of evolution, so why not let them handle feeding this animal?

They’re naturally low in fat

About 75 percent of pork weight is lean, while only around 45 percent of beef weights are muscle with much less amount of marbling (or intramuscular grease). This means that it takes more calories to eat pork than beef.

Also, pigs don’t need long chains of amino acids to make protein like cows do. That’s why you can find higher amounts of essential amino acids in soybeans than meat.

Beef production does require quite a bit of land compared to other animals. While chickens may take up slightly more space, they provide significantly more food per acre. For example, one chicken weighs about four pounds, whereas one cow weighing 1600 grams (about half as much) requires nearly seven acres of land to produce enough meat for one person.

They’re naturally high in cysteine

Cysteine is an amino acid, which is used for protein synthesis in your body. Having more cysteine helps your body form new proteins, which is why you need it (in particular) when you’re eating less meat.

But how much cheaper is pork than beef, even though they contain about the same amount of cysteine? A big part of the reason is that pigs are carnivores, while cows are herbivores.

When animals eat, they can only get so many nutrients from their food. For instance, if a pig eats lots of plants, she’s not going to get very good at eating vegetables.

Also, our diets affect what kinds of animals we use for food. Many people prefer white meat to red or bony meat due to cultural preferences. If this describes you, then consider switching up your diet some time to include more types of meat.

As a result, only about 30% of all pork consumed comes from farmers who protect their land from use for agricultural purposes. The majority come from concentrated livestock operations that keep hundreds or thousands of animals in small areas of land.

This provides even greater efficiencies in production, since large numbers of animals can be grown out of thin air by feeding grain rather than planting and harvesting acres of field space.
