It’s no secret that obesity is a leading cause of death, as people eat more and spend less time exercising. As weight gain becomes a norm in our society, production for artificial sweeteners increases.
These sugar substitutes are used to make up for the lack of sweetness coming from sugar. However, some concern has been raised about their safety. Emerging science suggests that these products could possibly be linked to negative health outcomes such as liver damage or cancer.
As we know, the average person does not consume massive amounts of this stuff, but it’s still something to consider if you have diabetes. For those with metabolic syndrome, which is also very prevalent today, would really like to have better choices.
There are also concerns about radioactivity in them due to the manufacturing process. One study found that bottled beverages contain around an average of 38 millirem of radioactive material. While many studies show that liquid foods consumed in small quantities do not pose any risk to your health, there is no proof that shows drinking these substances regularly can help lose weight.
However, contrary to other studies, most scientific research has demonstrated that sucrose (the main ingredient in sugar) is safe when ingested in small amounts.
Much greater risks come from consuming too much sugar or fat, things we all need to reduce via regular exercise and by paying attention to what we eat.

Yes, you should definitely consider stopping your intake of diet drinks. Unfortunately, most diet drinks contain sugar or flavoring, so even if they don’t list caffeine in its ingredients, it’s still coming from one source.
Sucrose is glucose plus fructose. It’s found in table sugar (also known as sucrose) and corn syrup, among others.
Although some studies show that moderate amounts of sucrates may help lower blood sugars, too much can cause problems such as obesity.
Consuming beverages containing artificial sweeteners instead of natural ones may be better for your overall health. However, researchers have not concluded whether any specific ingredient is better.
There are many available options with little to no documented health benefits. To choose alternatives that are just as effective but healthier, try reducing the amount you drink by pouring a bit into a glass of water or adding a pinch to your food.

For those who don’t have diabetes, however, Health Canada has determined that the small amount of sucralose in diet sodas and sports drinks is not dangerous.
In fact, according to Health Canada studies show that consumed as part of a balanced meal, sucralose can help reduce hunger levels and fuel consumption during the rest of your day.
Does sucralose even exist?
The idea of eliminating sugar from diet beverages has been controversial since it was first suggested in 1998. Many argue that our society is unnecessarily focused on weight loss, but industry experts disagree.
Since the early 2000’s, several diet drinks have been introduced with no or very little caffeine to help make them more appealing to consumers. Some of these new diets include polyols, which are sugars that have been engineered to be less addictive than glucose.
However, due to recent regulatory changes, this may not be possible anymore. In mid-2016, all versions of Diet Coke containing polyol began bearing a prominent “new label update” warning stating they contain saccharine—a generic name for a group of additives that includes glycerin (for something called “diCoke”) and sugar alcohols such as mannitol and sorbitol (to give things like “diet coca-cola” their distinctive taste).
Today, all versions of Coca-Cola, Sprite, and H2O also say there’s some amount of saccharine in them, although they don’t mention polyols specifically. Meanwhile, people who avoid soy also now find that you can’t drink Diet Coke because it contains another ingredient that comes from tofu.
Over the past few years, there has been some controversy over this ingredient in diet sodas. Some people have complained about its unpleasant taste and others about digestive issues.
In response to these complaints, in 2015, Coca-Cola began testing a new formulation without it. They called it “Next Generation” (or NG for short) HVF. Produced at one of their manufacturing plants, here is how they describe it; “This all natural sweetener is made from purified water, corn sugar, tara fruit juice, crystal lactites, and flavored with vanilla flavor.”
So what happened when we asked them if their sucralose replacement was better than conventional high fructose corn syrup? According to Coca-Cola, it was indeed better! And more importantly for our study, it had the same adverse health effects as traditional high fructose corn syrup.
Those effects include an increased risk of liver problems, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. Because it behaves similarly to glucose in your body, you may notice mood changes or feeling tired whether you are diabetic or not.
For those reasons, I would avoid using sucralose instead of other sweeter options. Instead, try substituting stevia where possible. It binds to proteins much less effectively, so you can also replace allergens with Steviapods. 🙂
